Electric Powered: Hawker Hurricane M.K. I (Late Production Version)

I purchased a short kit from sarik hobbies for Brian's Hawker Hurricane in 1/6.8 scale with a wingspan of 70". I have Brian's drawings from around 1986 that were released by Radio Control Modeller, plan No. R.M. 87. The drawings provided by sarik hobbies appears to be a an updated version of the original. The Hawker Hurricane is my all time favorite WW2 bird, such a gallant history and the brave men her flew her in such desperate times. I've wanted to build this model ever since I read the article back in 86. The time has finally come to enjoy creating this classic aircraft.

My research has lead me to pilot officer, Arthur "Taffy" Clowes of No.1 Squadron based in Wittering, Huntingdonshire (England) 1 October 1940. [The Battle of Britain]
Ftl. Clowes is credited with the shooting down of ten aircraft, one of which was shared with other pilots. A share in the destruction of one additional aircraft was unconfirmed. He is also credited with three aircraft probably destroyed and two damaged. He developed liver cancer and was hospitalized at RAF Hospital Ely, in Ely. He died there on 7 December 1949 and was buried at Brampton

Finally had some free time to get started on the build. I always start with the rudder and fin to get a feel for the plans and they build pretty fast so it seems like I'm making good progress, kinds like the placebo effect :-)

All use tracing paper to transfer the outline of rudder to the 1/6th balsa sheet as this is where the rudder build begins. There is a note on the plans indicating to keep the tail of the plane as light as possible, this is always a very good idea! After pondering the construction method I decided to create two 1/6th sheets to build each half of the rudder and fin on and then laminate them together. This will give me some strength in the structures after I cut out the areas to lighten things up.

Working on creating a scale hinge

Adding the antenna mask. Made it out of brass and removable.

Making a scale control horn that will operate like the real one with cables.

Getting started on the stabilizer and elevator. I still have some final detail to finish on the rudder and fin which all complete once the elevator and stab are complete. I'm going to keep going with the same method utilizing two 1/16th sheets and laminating them together, seems to be providing a rigid and light structure.

Creating the stab ribs

Getting closer on the stabilizer. I had to add balsa blocks on the edges of the stab so I have enough material to sand and shape with. The drawings show installing 1/16th sheeting around the corner but when I tried to get the proper shape I ended up sanding thru the material. I'm on my 3rd sanding go around but the shape is getting closer and the stab is plenty strong.

Going to use my Hawker Hurricane 1/24th scale plastic model for reference as well. This kits are very accurate and work great for checking measurements and overall look of the parts worked on.
