Hawker Hurricane MK.1

Hawker Hurricane MK I designed by Brian Taylor

Electric Powered: Hawker Hurricane M.K. I (Late Production Version)

I purchased a short kit from sarik hobbies for Brian's Hawker Hurricane in 1/6.8 scale with a wingspan of 70". I have Brian's drawings from around 1986 that were released by Radio Control Modeller, plan No. R.M. 87. The drawings provided by sarik hobbies appears to be a an updated version then the original. I will use the original set from RCM as I have them in PDF format so I can enlarge the plans using Photoshop and send it off to my local printer. The Hawker Hurricane fighter has a wingspan of 40 feet, which when reduced to 1/6th scale, builds into an impressive wingspan of 80 inches. Changes will be made to incorporate a three-piece wing to make transporting easy. Lots of scratch building to accomplish this build, I better get started!

My research has lead me to pilot officer, Arthur "Taffy" Clowes of No.1 Squadron based in Wittering, Huntingdonshire (England) 1 October 1940. [The Battle of Britain]
Ftl. Clowes is credited with the shooting down of ten aircraft, one of which was shared with other pilots. A share in the destruction of one additional aircraft was unconfirmed. He is also credited with three aircraft probably destroyed and two damaged. He developed liver cancer and was hospitalized at RAF Hospital Ely, in Ely. He died there on 7 December 1949 and was buried at Brampton

Started construction with the tail fin. After verifying that my drawings were matching the
3-View I'm using, I started to trace the plans so I could transfer the patterns to my balsa sheets.

Adding in some missing detail on the original plans.

1/16th balsa sheeting for the fin half's cut and sanded to the basic shape. My goal is to keep the tail section as light as possible so I will end up cutting a lot of the balsa sheets away once the ribs and other detail have been added.

Laying out the rib placement to match the 3-view drawings. This original drawing sets has extra ribs for strength and then some scale rib locations as well. I'm going to to go with the scale rib locations only to help keep the weight down. The updated drawings has the extra ribs removed as well.

Once I finished building the two half's I used 5 minute epoxy to glue them together. Now I need to start shaping the ribs for the proper look and add the leading edge sheet.
