HASEGAWA - Kit Review

I started the build on October 21, 2023. After looking over the kit and reviewing books, drawings and other resources, I discovered that the DR1 kit will need some extensive modifications to create the model into a museum worthy scale model. The Hasegawa company presented the model as museum scale, which it is sort of,  but it is lacking in some areas which I will document during the build. The kit built straight out of the box is still a very impressive display model of this legendary fighter.

HASEGAWA - Kit Review

The Hasegawa 1/8 scale Fokker Dr.I is a "museum series" model kit featuring a multimedia build with plastic, wood, and metal parts. It is a large-scale, highly detailed replica of the famous World War I German triplane flown by Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron. The kit is no longer in regular production, so it is typically available only on the secondary market.

Kit details and features

Highly detailed: The kit includes 857 parts for a highly detailed and accurate reproduction of the aircraft's internal and external structures. Some builders note a few inaccuracies but find it to be an impressive display piece.

Multimedia construction: The kit combines different materials for a realistic finish, with plastic and metal components as well as wooden parts for the fuselage and other structures.

Large-scale replica: The 1/8 scale results in a finished model with an impressive wingspan of 32.99 inches and a fuselage length of 28.42 inches.

Museum series: The Fokker Dr.I was part of a series of large-scale, multimedia kits released by Hasegawa in the 1980s and re-released in 2004. The series also included the Sopwith Camel, SE5a, and Wright Flyer.
