DR1-Rotary Engine

The Build

Here is a link to all the pictures I took during the build. Some of the pictures were of my first attempts at different construction techniques that did not work out so well :-)  DR 1 Google Photos

Oberursel UR.2 Rotary Engine

I started with the engine first. The kit includes the Oberursel UR.2 rotary engine, which comes with these valve guides. After researching the engine, I noticed that the valve guide brackets (for lack of a better term) were not present—I'm not sure why—but I plan to remove them since the Red Barons’ aircraft I’m modeling did not have these guides.

I’ve only found a handful of photos showing these guides on some rotary engines, like the one below. The LeRhone manual I purchased does not show them either. You can download the manual here if you wish: LeRhone Manual

Also noticed that the kit engine did not have these areas modeled into the motor case so I will need to add them as well as they are a dominate feature on the motor.

Getting started with the cylinders

Added the milled out look on the engine case with Milliput.

Removed the valve guides and I'm adding the round inlet guides using styrene tubing.

The pushrod inlets were not molded in the correct position on the motor case. I made adjustments to the case position to allow the proper angle of the pushrods. Added the pushrod inlets to the engine case as well.

Everything is lining up correctly now, just had to rotate it to the right just a little bit.

Lining up the exhaust stacks after adjusting the engine case angle.

Adding more detail to the pushrod inlets.

Painting started on the engine, base coat in ALCAD chrome paint.

I used lead wire for the spark plug wires, worked great and they look the part.

The engine is now complete and ready for install. Used multiple coats of various ALCAD colors and Tamyia paints. I use only Tamyia and ALCAD paints as I always get excellent results with these two brands. Time to set this aside for now in a safe place until its time to install it.
